Perry County Council of the Arts (PCCA) will host a 3-Day Nature and Art Batik workshop with Halifax artist Kuen Kuen Liu Spichiger this fall. Students will learn about the legend of Chinese Miao people, who discovered batik and passed it on from generation to generation. Students will also explore the significant meanings of the objects in nature in the Miao culture, such as butterflies, flowers, trees, and birds. They will also appreciate the design and esthetics of batik garments made in dresses, baby carriers, blankets and banners for worshipping their ancestors.
Each student will bring home 1 to 5 finished pieces and remaining supplies. Using 12 inches x 12 inches, 100% cotton fabric and traditional handmade wax pens (made by Miao), beeswax and indigo dye, they can make batik pieces for use in framed fabric art, bags, book covers and etc.
